sas: project recast

GD  410  Online and Mobile Interaction Design Systems- Collaboration & Opportunity

The NCSU College of Design and SAS have had a strong collaborative relationship for years, and during my junior year, I had the opportunity to participate in a SAS sponsored project: Project Recast. The objective of Project Recast was to redesign and revitalize specific SAS forecasting software. Lisa Bogart and I focused on SAS Forecast, SAS Designer, and SAS Viewer.

Together we were able to update and simplify the structure and design of these programs, and created a click-through to showcase the new process and layout. We were invited to present our designs at SAS at the end of the semester. We discussed our process and research and presented our findings on a banner and in our final video.

SOFTWARE RESEARCH

After initial meetings with SAS representatives, our first task was to determine what the specific software currently accomplishes, and what they hoped it would accomplish after a redesign. We watched tutorial videos and experimented with the programs to create a Task Flow: how the user goes through the process, a software Architecture: how the program is organized, and an Affinity diagram: comparing existing problems and possible design solutions. This process was extremely helpful in determining "What does this button do?" and "Is this feature absolutely necessary?".
